Grave Peril: Book Review
Title: Grave Peril (Book 3/11 in the Dresden Files series)
Author: Jim Butcher
Number of Pages: 347
Genre: Mystery/Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Book Number/Goal: 33/50 in 2009
Review: Each book keeps getting better than the previous one.
I thought this book was fantastic. The plot completely hooked me and very much drew me in to the story. I felt absolutely compelled to keep reading to find out what happens next. I typically read mystery novels where you are given enough clues to puzzle out the murderer, not so here, and that just drives me more to keep reading.
I very much like the introduction of Michael. I think he makes an excellent partner (I don't think he quite fits the role of "side-kick") for Dresden. He's like Dresden's human conscience. I hope to see more of him in upcoming books. (Side note: I also adore his wife. She sounds like hell on wheels!)
I was disappointed that there wasn't the level of interaction between Dresden and Murphy that I would have hoped for in this book. Understandable, of course, given the situation, but I really missed it. One of the elements that I find so enjoyable in the books is the back and forth between them. I hope that returns in the next books.
I also wish that there was a bit more humor in the book. (See above) I think that's the missing element for me.
Don't get me wrong though, I thought the book was EXCELLENT. It definitely carried more substance than the first two books. It's just the shipper in me ;)
On a shipping note - the whole last 1/3 of the book I was in total conflict...I wanted Susan to be all right, for there to be a happy ending, etc. but at the same time I was like, if she's alright there is absolutely no hope for KM/HD. I so want to hate Susan, and I just can't. I'm psyched to start reading Summer Knight so I can find out what happens.
