book 08Title: The Grey King
Author: Susan Cooper
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Book Number/Goal: 8/50

Plot: On a recuperation holiday in Wales, Will Stanton is introduced to Bran Davies, an unusual boy who turns out to have a part to play against the Dark's rising.
My Thoughts: This is the book that suffered most from the fact that I'd read it years before. My tastes since then have changed somewhat, though not entirely. I really adored the brief glimpse into the Welsh Language. It makes me long, a bit, to have some skill with other languages. But I didn't initially care for Bran much at all. He had a (rather understandable) chip on his shoulder that put me off, though I can remember absolutely adoring him when I was 11 or 12. I suspect that, at the younger ages, my brain connected him more readily with another favorite character from a different series, who also had a large chip on his shoulder. It took me longer, this time around, to get a feel for liking Bran, but he did finally settle back into place.

book 09Title: Silver on the Tree
Author: Susan Cooper
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Book Number/Goal: 9/50

Plot: The Six are brought together for their final quest to end the Dark's rising.
My Thoughts: After having finally re-read all the books, I'd say offhand that this is my favorite of the lot. The characters are solidly familiar by this point, and somewhat comfortable with each other. There are still tensions and uncomfortable moments between them, but that's all part of coming together on a quest in the realm of Fantasy, so that, too, had it's place as part of my fun. I liked the challenges. I liked the descriptions. It was the one I just zipped through, just having fun.

Would I read this book again? Yes
