So what's this comm all about? And other Questions.
A Reader Is Me is a reading challenge community similar to 52 Books in 52 Weeks or the Cannonball Read, but with one major difference. In this challenge, you set your own goals.
How it works: First, you sit down and figure out what kind reading goal suits you. Do you want to read ten books in the next two weeks? Or maybe just two a month for the rest of the year? Do you want to specify the type of books you'll be reading, like maybe, 20 books with GLBT themes between now and the end of the year, or perhaps three books on writing before NaNoWriMo? You can do all that and more; it's up to you to set a goal you're comfortable with.
Secondly, you post your goal in an introduction post on the comm. You'll need to tell us three things: the number of books you plan on reading, the length of time you plan on taking to read them, and your definition of a book. That last one is there because I don't want to say "no graphic novels!" or "nothing under 200 pages counts!" or "no, you can't count something if you've read it before!" Feel free to tell us more about you and your reading habits if you like; the whole point of this place is to build a community of readers.
Thirdly, you start reading. Each time you finish a book, post a little about it. At the very least, you should post the title and the author and tell us where you are on your goal. If you like, and I do want to encourage this, you can post a short (or not so short) review/rec/non-rec.
Finally, at some point, you will have reached your goal. Post a "go me!" post so that everyone else can tell you how awesome you are. At which point it's up to you if you want to set a new goal or just rest on your laurels for a while.
So why the silly name? Because this isn't supposed to be a huge (OMG srs bizness!!) deal. It's just a bunch of people who want to read books in a vaguely structured setting.
Will there be prizes? Other than the feeling of accomplishment and the congratulations from your fellow comm members? Well, see, my ability to make graphics is pretty much limited to cropping a picture and resizing it to 100x100. If there are graphics makers out there who want to make banners or icons, that would be awesome. Or you can make one for yourself, or I dunno, buy yourself a drink or make yourself some cookies. :)
Is it okay to have more than one goal at once? Oh sure! And books can count twice. Say, like someone I know, you're inspired by Amazonfail to read ten GLBT books by the end of the month, but you also have a goal of fifty books for the year. There's no reason you can't post both goals, and count the ten books as part of your fifty. Of course if you'd rather keep up two seperate goals, you can do that too.
