Review: I LOVE this series. I find the humor to be just what I need on days when I need a laugh without having to exert much effort to get it. These are definitely books I'll be pulling back out once my son starts middle school. I'm looking forward to the 4th installment coming out later this year.

It made me want to go through my cupboards and fridge and purge everything (not to mention move to the UK). The information provided is well presented and referenced. I found her arguemnts compelling, and her logic sound.

Review: I definitely enjoyed this one. It was quite unusual. It wasn't as good as the last one, IMO, but as the last one is probably my favorite in the series, I wasn't expecting it to be. I'm definitely looking forward to starting the next one tonight.

Overall, I think the first book was more solid of a story, but this book definitely drew me in faster/harder. I think a lot of that had to do with the adjustment period from reading forensic novels almost exclusively before switching over into the sci-fi/fantasy realm.

Book 3 arrives on Wednesday and I can't wait to read it.
Title: Ecological Inteligence
Author: Daniel Goleman
Number of Pages: 247
Genre: Non-Fiction
Book Number/Goal: 31/50 in 2009

Review: This book is definitely a worthwhile read. It's not a "how to" book by any means. It's not a detailed list of products that are "worthwhile" or "green". Instead, it tells you how to get the information you need, and more importantly what information you need and why it's important.

Goleman does provide two resources for finding information: GoodGuide Inc. (http://www.goodguide.com/) and SkinDeep (http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/). At times portions of the book felt like an infomercial, but the benefit of these resources outweighed the slight annoyance.

And, as a side note, this amused me (I really need to get out more, and perhaps not read when I'm tired and punchy):

Researchers in New Zealand mapped the genome of ruminant animals like sheep and cows to discover the genes that regulate flatulence, in order to develop a vaccine that will greatly reduce "flatulent emissions" from livestock--which now account for 28 percent of human-related methane buildup.

My question, did the researches include that project on their CVs???
Title: Storm Front (Book 1/11 in the Dresden Files series)
Author: Jim Butcher
Number of Pages: 308
Genre: Mystery/Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Book Number/Goal: 30/50 in 2009

Review: This wasn't quite what I expected, but once I made the adjustment, I found it quite entertaining. I think a friend of mine put it best when she said it was Harry Potter meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I'm a big fan of the dry wit/sarcasm, and even found the old cliches funny. I really liked the dynamic between Dresden and Murphy. I'm hoping that relationship continues to develop. I have a feeling I'm going to start shipping them, though I'd be happy with just a stable friendship.

I have not seen the TV series, but I hear that it's quite a bit different from the books, so I'm not quite sure I want to watch. I definitely want to keep reading the series though.

Name: [personal profile] amanda_in_pajamas
Goal: [at least] 50 books in 2009
Definition of "book": fiction or non, published (no fanfiction); no children's books (I read to my son a LOT, that would be impossible to keep track of); 1st read only
Books read so far: 26

A little about my goal and my reading habits: I'm an avid reader who has had difficulties trying to find as much time as I'd like for reading, though I have found made more time for reading since recently becoming hooked on the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell. I'm currently reading Predator, book 14 (of 16) in the series. I enjoy reading mystery/suspense fiction. JD Robb, Patricia Cornwell, and Mary Higgins Clark are among my favorite fiction writers. For non-fiction, I read books on education, child development, and healthy/green living. My favorite non-fiction authors include Jane M. Healey, John Holt, and Michael Thompson.
